Ask HN: Modernising a website made up of 140,000 hand-written html files?

The website is http://marxists.org/, so any solution would have to be:

* future-proof (very long-term)

* not disrupt things too much (2 million hits per month, been around in one form or another for 20+ years)

* not be too complicated for volunteers without much technical knowledge

* be scalable and fast (there are 140,000 pages according to google [these are all hand-written bog-standard HTML], and the entire site takes up >100GiB)

I originally thought along the lines of a static site generator, but I don't know of anything that's up to the task as I only have experience with Jekyll. The entire site is a disaster, it's put together with chewing gum and bits of string. It's impossible and depressing to work with. Help!
