Last year, during my job search, I had trouble comparing the various offers I received. Understanding the potential payout of stock options vs RSUs, along with the impact of different tax policies in various cities, proved to be quite difficult. It was also made clear to me that the companies I interviewed at did not understand this either.
One startup I interviewed with sent me an excel sheet, which was literally just a table with three columns: the initial value of the equity I was offered, a potential valuation of the company, and the resulting value of my equity with that valuation (so just equity value*growth). They shared this same spreadsheet with every candidate.
I wanted to understand the actual potential payout of different job offers, so I built an app for it. The app accepts inputs for things like: location, stock grant type, projected growth/dilution, taxation info, and more to get a very realistic projection of your net worth over time if you were to take a specific job. You can also input multiple offers and see charts comparing cash, equity, and taxes payed between the different offers you input.
Please let me know if you have any feedback!
PS
- In the taxes section you can only select US states (and Washington DC)
- Planning to make a pop up section on the app detailing assumptions/caveats for the calculations (for example, currently using tax brackets from 2022)
