Full Story: I posted on HN before on this... I quit my job as a Staff FW Eng 3 yrs ago after working there for over 8 years. I travelled for a year. Then naively took an entire year to build out this fully functional iOS platform that mimics Yelp x Snapchat. Found it incredibly hard to get traction especially for a 2 sided market... Did also spend 2 months to crank out a Lightning Network Wallet. Thinking that I'm Pieter Levels, which of course I'm not....
Running out of ideas & disillusioned about doing my own 'startup', I thought my portfolio should be good and the app is quite complex. Video streaming, intricate background pre-fetching, custom UI, reputation system for feed ordering, etc. Only to find out that companies just want me to do coding challenges on Coderpad or Hackerank, etc. Over 3 months I went through Google, Amazon, Snapchat, Triplebyte & basically bombed them all either at phone screen or on-site. None of them want to look at my resume or portfolio. When have looking at resumes become 'biased'? If anything seeing my face and hence gender and race, is more 'biased'?
There were 2 smaller companies that gave me take-homes instead, and I aced them both. Unfortunately neither wants to fly me in. One of them instead made me jump thru 5 more phone screens over another month (no code challenges tho), only to tell me another month later they no longer need more on the team, and might reconsider Q1/Q2...
I took a month off doing some startup/product consulting for a friend of friend. And now is looking at how to restart this job search process. I am starting to think I should only find jobs which interviews thru going through my portfolio, or gives take-homes. Is there a job board for that? Thanks!
