Ask HN: How Is the Startup Tech Scene in Nova Scotia?

I'm immigrating to Nova Scotia (Halifax) in July this year under Provincial Nominee Program and doing some scouting. I have reached out to a few engineers living and working there through my network and they have been very helpful in general but could not provide much info on startups (they are consultants and/or working on enterprises).

I am trying to find:

1. What are some startups in Nova Scotia that are doing interesting work? (I've found out about GoInstant, later acquired by Salesforce. Any other such success stories?)

2. What are the tech events (meet ups, conferences or un-conferences) that take place on a regular/semi-regular basis?

3. Any advice on how to network with people working in startups?

Or, any general information that you believe to be helpful, I'll appreciate it!

My background: I'm an engineer with 7+ years of experience, have been working with an NYC-based marketing startup for the most part of my career[0].
